John has the privilege of combining two vocational passions – partnering with non-profit organizations to realize their dreams, and coaching organizations to maximize their effectiveness in a world of constant change. John’s philanthropic career includes leading a complex fund development program for a national charity, eight years as a Senior Consultant for the leading Canadian philanthropic consulting firm, KCI, Ketchum Canada, and more than a decade as an independent consultant. John is the Principal of John McLaverty & Associates and recruits additional consultants from his network to meet specific client needs.

Skills earned and learned

John’s skills arise from more than 30 years in the not-for-profit and corporate arenas. In addition to fundraising knowledge, John is a proven asset in leadership development, strategic thinking, and volunteer management.
An adept consensus-builder, John knows how to engage complex organizational systems and guide them through change, while raising money. More than once John’s insight and wisdom were instrumental in bringing together partners representing multiple sites. Under his guidance, disparate partners adopted a co-operative approach to fundraising and other.
His experience engaging stakeholders in interviews and focus groups is a strong asset. His work has guided national and international non-profit organizations in marketing, organizational planning, fundraising, and leadership recruitment.
In addition to managing his consulting practice, John is Allied Counsel with KMA Consultants and is also a Senior Consultant and Advisor for FCM Network. John is married to Linda and lives in Toronto, Ontario, in a blended family of six adult children and four grandchildren.
